Just before Cory and I walked out of The Ravington, Chelsea caught me to thank us for keeping the day chill. “That’s why we vibe well, because you’re chill like me.” Stephanie (How Eventful) and I had spent most of the day commenting on how easy Chelsea and Blake were to work with and to hear her say that we matched her vibe was the best compliment we could have received.
The biggest frustration I hear with wedding photographers is that the whole wedding just becomes one big photoshoot. Well that is the very opposite of my goal. I’m not here to ask you to pose through your whole day. I’m here to capture your genuine self, the in-between moments, the emotions that can’t be expressed in a stiff photo. Don’t get me wrong, I will guide you and give direction as needed. I will facilitate the moments that do look more like photoshoots – we have lists for family photos because we don’t want to miss one. But overall, I want you to look back on your day and remember your cousin’s excitement when she hugged you at your reception. Your mom catching her tear with her napkin. The hype of the dance floor because your love is worth celebrating. You should remember the moments, not the directions.
I think my super power might be reading the vibe – knowing when to step in and guide, but also where to look to see the emotions. I love nothing more than to be your hype girl and tell you how fantastic you look, but I’m working on when to shut up and let the moment unfold. Being chill is my true nature, but weddings bring out the excitement inside.
