White Backdrop Minis – Tips & Tricks

How to Make the Most of Your White Backdrop Mini Session

White backdrop minis (also known as personality minis) are some of my favorite sessions to photograph. They’re simple, timeless, and allow your personalities to truly shine without distractions.

Because these sessions are short and scheduled back-to-back, a little preparation goes a long way in making sure you get the absolute most out of your time. After multiple years of hosting these minis, I have a bit of insight to share with you. Here are my best tips to help your session feel easy, fun, and successful:

Arrive a Few Minutes Early

Mini sessions are scheduled one right after another, which means we’ll be starting right on time.

I recommend arriving 5–10 minutes early so you can:

  • Let your kids settle into the space
  • Make any last-minute outfit adjustments
  • Use the restroom if needed
  • Take a breath before we jump in

This small buffer makes a huge difference, especially for younger kids who may need a minute to warm up.

Come Photo-Ready (Including Parents!)

Even if the session is “for the kids,” I always recommend that parents come dressed and camera-ready.

Why?

Because kids often feel more comfortable when they can:

  • Sit with you
  • Hug you
  • Be held for a few shots

And sometimes… those end up being the most meaningful images of all 🤍

Even if you don’t plan to be in many photos, being ready gives us flexibility in the moment—and I promise, you won’t regret it.

Keep Outfits Simple & Intentional

The beauty of a white backdrop is its clean, minimal look—so your outfits should complement that.

A few tips:

  • Stick with neutral tones or soft colors
  • Avoid large logos or busy patterns
  • Think texture over pattern (linen, knits, denim)
  • Coordinate, don’t match exactly

And if you’re bringing a second outfit, make sure it’s easy to change quickly!

Embrace Personality Over Perfection

These sessions are designed to capture real personality—not stiff poses or forced smiles.

That means:

  • Silly faces are welcome
  • Movement is encouraged
  • Imperfect moments often become favorites

If your child is shy, energetic, or somewhere in between—that’s perfectly okay. I’ll guide the session in a way that works for them.

Keep It Light (and Fun!)

Kids pick up on energy quickly. The more relaxed and playful the environment feels, the better the photos will be.

A few helpful tips:

  • Avoid putting pressure on them to “perform”
  • Keep directions simple and positive
  • Let them be themselves

I’ll take care of the rest.

Trust the Process

In just 20 minutes, we can capture so much—but it works best when we lean into the flow rather than trying to control every moment.

I’ll guide you through:

  • Natural prompts
  • Quick transitions
  • A mix of posed and candid moments

All you need to do is show up, be present, and enjoy your people.

Bonus Tip

Props are welcome! These minis are meant to be simple and easy, but they are also meant to represent whatever season of life you are in.

That can look like:

  • A favorite lovey/stuffed animal
  • Milestone balloons – birthday, anniversary, etc
  • A favorite book
  • Instrument
  • Sporting equipment

Props are not necessary, but we can include them in a few photos and truly capture what this season looks like for you.

Final Thoughts

White backdrop minis are meant to be easy, joyful, and beautifully simple.

No stress. No complicated setups. Just a space where your family can show up as you are—and walk away with images that feel timeless and true.

I can’t wait to photograph you 🤍
