As professional wedding photographers, we believe your detail photos are just as important as your portraits. These are the images that quietly tell your story.

Generally, the first item on this NWA wedding photographer’s timeline says “Detail Photos.” Detail photos—often called flat lays—are carefully styled images of your wedding items photographed from above or in a curated arrangement. These are usually captured while you’re getting ready, before the day gets busy.

Common flat lay items include:

Your invitation suite (invitation, envelopes, RSVP cards, stamps)
Engagement and wedding rings
Shoes
Jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hair pieces)
The wedding dress or veil details
Groom’s accessories (tie, cufflinks, watch, boutonniere)
Perfume or cologne
Heirlooms (lockets, family rings, handkerchiefs)
Vow books or letters
Anything with your married last name (ring boxes, seating chart name tag, etc)

How to Prepare Your Detail Items for Photos

To make the most of your wedding flat lay photography, we recommend setting aside all your items in a small box or bag before the wedding day. This saves time and ensures nothing gets missed.

Detail photo checklist:

Full invitation suite (2–3 copies if possible)
Rings (all three: engagement + both wedding bands)
Jewelry and accessories
Shoes
Perfume/cologne
Vow books or letters
Any heirloom or sentimental items
Extra florals

You can find a more detailed checklist to print here. You may or may not have all of the items listed and that’s ok. There are a few blank lines to fill in any items you may want to add that are special to your day and not already on the list. I recommend gathering items together and checking them off the list the week before the wedding so that you are not scrambling the night before or the day of (except extra florals of course, but reach out to your florist ahead of time so that they set some aside as well).

Our Approach

As a husband-and-wife wedding photography team, we love starting the day with details – both the bride’s and the groom’s. It allows us to ease into the rhythm of the wedding day while you’re getting ready, and it gives us time to thoughtfully style and document everything you’ve chosen. Often the details are photographed separately – I (Morgan) will capture the bride’s and Cory will capture the groom’s – especially if prep is happening in separate locations. However, we encourage that all of the rings (engagement and both wedding bands) are together with the bridal details.

Final Thoughts

The dress is typically photographed during this “details” time frame as well, however it is not used during your flat lay and therefore did not get mentioned earlier. If your dress needs steamed, be sure whoever does that work does it prior to hair and makeup so as not to affect either.
